MOUNTAIN CLIMBS
MOUNTAIN CLIMBS
The Mountain Climbs marked the beginning of Friends-Together’s work in Africa. In 2003, Steve returned from work one day, set his briefcase down, and shared a simple but bold idea with Cathy: “We’re going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Friends-Together,” inspired by the spirit of charity walks and bikeathons.
The first trip to Tanzania in 2004 came under extraordinary circumstances. Hurricane Charley had just struck, causing widespread damage, yet supporters showed up for the launch despite their own homes being affected. The team pressed forward, packed, and embarked on the climb.
That first mountain climb shaped the mission and vision of all Friends-Together’s work in Africa, inspiring relief efforts, educational programs, and long-term partnerships that continue to this day. It demonstrated the power of commitment, community, and determination—even in the face of enormous challenges.
