BIKE RIDES (2002–2011)

Friends-Together’s bike rides began as a fundraising and awareness initiative for families infected and affected by HIV. Started by Tom Croce, a math teacher at Gulf Coast High School, the rides were ambitious events—500 miles in 5 days—traversing Florida from Tallahassee to Naples.

These rides were more than a fundraiser; they were mobile education events. Riders passed through rural communities, engaging with residents, answering questions about HIV, and raising awareness along the way. Local media covered the rides, helping spread the message statewide.

Riders included adults, youth, and volunteers, with some participating in relay-style segments while others rode the full distance. In 2005, Garrett became the first young rider to complete the full ride, marking a poignant milestone as it was the last event Steve participated in before his passing.

Over time, the rides grew in popularity and impact, combining fundraising, HIV awareness, and community engagement. Insurance and safety concerns eventually led to the program’s conclusion in 2011, but the legacy of advocacy, education, and connection remains a highlight in Friends-Together’s history.
