Cathy Robinson-PickettIn 1991, Cathy Robinson-Pickett had built her life -- as a mother and a wife. She had a year old daughter and a son on the way. She had just celebrated her third wedding anniversary. She had a life of normalcy and contentment, but that all changed after a routine life insurance exam.
In 1991, Cathy learned that she was HIV positive. Her infection was traced back to a sexual assult that occured in 1984, when she was a college student. In 1992, Cathy began her crusade of HIV education and prevention work. She traveled around florida, speaking to classes, school assemblies, and conferences. This small start quickly grew to a national effort to educate youth to prevent the spread of this deadly virus.
In 2000, Cathy and her late husband Steve Pickett founded Friends-Together, Inc., a non -profit organization geared toward educating and meeting the needs of families infected and affected by HIV.
Today Cathy has built a new life .She survived the loss of her job, house, and husband Steve who was tragically killed in an auto accident in 2005. She has also overcome breast cancer to become an advocate of hope, an educator aof prevention, and a crusader of life.
The goal of Friends-Together is to empower, educate, and network families infected and affected by HIV and AIDS, as well as provide education and prevention messages for the genereal public. The organization is dedicated to raising funds to bring much needed prevention messages to groups regardless of their ability to pay. Currently Cathy’s Friends-Together is hosting educational retreats and camps for families and children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. |
